Health Benefits of Dog Ownership

As dog lovers, we understand that our four-legged friends offer unconditional measures of love and companionship. However, not only is this a common feeling but a scientific fact, backed by thoroughly-researched reports from various groups including Harvard Medical School and Washington State University.

To begin, dogs encourage you to embark on outdoor adventures like daily walks and games of fetch, thus increasing your heart rate and prompting consistent exercise, which, in turn, improves your health. Furthermore, according to a study conducted from 1950 to 2019, people who own dogs live longer than those who do not. Specifically, dog ownership links to a reduced risk of cardiovascular issues, due to lower blood pressure, an improved lipid profile, and reduced stress.

Additionally, in terms of mental health, dogs serve as impeccable companions and loyal guides through difficult emotional battles. Those who battle depression or other mental disorders often turn to dogs for support, as their nurturing nature may provide a missing sense of warmth, comfort, or companionship. Loneliness, in particular, is a resounding, common struggle; luckily, dogs and their innate ability to display affection through cuddles and activities simultaneously reduces feelings of isolation or loneliness.

Moreover, stress, another mentally-encompassing, widespread challenge, may be relieved through dog ownership, as well. Merely petting a dog lowers blood pressure, heart rate, slows breathing, and eases muscle tension, according to scientists at Washington State University.

Dogs can also help seniors with cognitive disabilities, resulting from mental illness. Pet therapy, according to a 2010 study, helped to decrease Geriatric Depression Scale symptoms by 50%. Plus, many participants noted an improvement regarding their discerned quality of life.

Overall, dogs make us happier, more sophisticated individuals, due to the juxtaposition of love, companionship, and responsibility. Given the scientific data coupled with the previous common knowledge of dogs’ affection, a wide array of health benefits, both physically and mentally, emanate from owning a dog.
