Not only are dogs adorable, playful animals but, on some occasions, life-saving heroes. Displayed through mountains of examples, certain dogs are willing to risk their lives, in hopes of saving humans--most often their beloved owners.
First, in Garibaldi, Brazil, a dog named Max was out exercising with his owner, Osmar Persisco. The two were then approached by robbers, in hopes of stealing Persisco’s car keys. When he disobeyed, the criminals shot him in the head. This seemingly hopeless situation quickly turned around as Max jumped and attacked the two men. One of the men shot Max twice in the chest and once in the leg before running away. Because of Max’s intervention, the robbers were distracted and refrained from further injuring Persisco. Thankfully, in the end, Max was rushed to the vet and survived to experience the appreciation of his heroic deed.
Naida, a stray dog, is thought of as “the Siberian Lifeguard.” In Krasnoyarsk, Russia, a four-year-old boy, Andrei Pavlov, was feeding ducks when his body broke through the surface of the frozen pond, submerging him under the ice-cold water. Luckily, Naida had taken an interest in Pavlov the entire day, so the dog began to bark, calling for rescue. One woman who feeds the city’s stray dogs heard the barks and ran over to Naida. In the knick of time, nearby workers were alerted and helped pull the boy out of the water. Without Naida’s help, it is safe to assume that Pavlov would not have survived.
Next, Bandit, a small Pomeranian-poodle mix, was staying with the DeStefani family in Mays Landing, New Jersey. Bandit’s owner was out of town at the time. In an attempt to sterilize a hairbrush, Rich DeStefani submerged it into boiling water. DeStefani left the pot on the stove right around the time his family went to sleep. Around 3:30AM, the water disappeared and toxic smoke emerged from the burned plastic. Although the smoke detectors did not go off, Bandit quickly awoke and jumped on Jennifer DeStefani until she woke up--then able to alert her husband and daughter. Without Bandit’s protection and keen sense of smell, there is no telling what the dangerous--possibly fatal--toxic smoke was capable of.
Lastly, Treo, a black Labrador and retired member of the British military, was a member of Afghanistan’s 104 Military Working Dog Support Unit where he found two hidden bombs in Helmand province, saving countless lives. Consequently, Treo earned the Dickin Medal, an incredibly high military honor for animals, and thus became a decorated war hero for his life-saving talent.
In sum, whether these dogs offered a warning sign to their home or physically protected their loved ones, these pups are incredibly brave souls and deserve to be regarded as true heroes.
