The second I stepped into Wags and Walks, an animal rescue organization located near Wilshire Boulevard, for my first shift to help with their dogs in need of homes, I was happily overwhelmed with the amount of care and attention they give to them.
The building is bright and happy, with clean, big stalls for each dog, small or big, with name tags posted on the front of each. They all smile as I approach them, even though they have already walked multiple times and it's only 12 o’clock. Each one has kind eyes and a new story to tell me. One dog, a black mix of breeds, is now deaf and blind due to an infection that was not treated fast enough, the fault of the previous owner. In Wags and Walks care, they have treated this beautiful dogs by paying thousands of dollars to veterinary hospitals. And that's just one story - in total they have treated thousands of dogs in their care.
I took this black, curly haired dog on a Walk and got to know her. She seemed timid but for the past couple of weeks, I have seen her become more open and less scared.
The work Wags and Walks does is incredible- never have I seen a shelter where the dogs are their number one priority. From the special foods for each dog, to the organization of the toys, the cleanliness of the stalls, and the smiles on every worker's face - I always look forward to being there every weekend. Each volunteer or worker genuinely loves dogs so much. All they want to do is save each and every dog's life and provide them with the care they need after being abandoned.
I urge every person who wants to help dogs in need to come stop by Wags and Walks where every volunteer is eager to do whatever it takes to save a dog's life.
