Ranging from picnics to pool parties, summer dog activities are endless. It’s about time to expand the horizons for activities to participate in with your pups, even though they have undoubtedly relished COVID-19’s inherent, Zoom-adjacent relaxation periods. Nonetheless, after a certain point, you both can only handle so many quarantine walks. Now, there are many other (less tiring, for that matter) options, which both you and your pup will love. If you are interested in spending quality time with your dog, then you have come to the right place!
Beach Picnic
If you live near a beach, you may know there’s no better pastime than a sunset picnic, overlooking the bright blue ocean. While packing a dog picnic may have never crossed your mind, it’s a great idea for those yearning to spend time outdoors with their dog. Luckily, packing for the occasion is half the fun, so next time you plan on voyaging toward the beach, bring your pup along!
You can either order food from a local restaurant or prepare your favorite meal. But, don’t stop there! Be sure to include an array of dog treats, water, and whatever other meal your pet loves. Once the food is packed into a picnic basket, grab a towel or a picnic blanket, and head to the beach.
There, you can enjoy your meals and take pictures, capturing the beautiful scenery while simultaneously enjoying the salty-aired surroundings. Plus, after your meal, you can play with your dog--either fetch, a light jog, or a casual stroll along the shore.
Puppy Pool Party
It’s called the doggy paddle for a reason! Aside from a few exceptions, most dogs love the water. When the summer heat intensifies and you crave a dip in the pool or ocean, bring your pup! Your four-legged friends can swim alongside you, participating in laps or even a pool game.
However, if they are not particularly fond of the water, you can set up a spot next to you with a towel (and an umbrella, if your dog craves a little extra luxury) where your dog can sunbathe and watch you swim. Another option, for the pool specifically, is to share your pool float with them; your dog will jump at the opportunity to sit on a float, likely unaware of the water surrounding them.
Finally, if you and your friends feel up to it, you can host your very own pool party, dogs included, of course. Line the tables with your favorite snacks as well as some dog treats!
Four-Legged Lunch Date
Depending on where you live, there are numerous restaurants that allow dogs, primarily in outdoor settings. A quick google search will help you determine the perfect spot for you and your pup to enjoy a summertime meal together. If you're lucky, some places even have dog menus. For example, as a Los Angeles local, a couple places that accept pets with open arms include, The Morrison and The Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar--which each have over four star ratings, according to Yelp and Google.
Additionally, for a more on-the-go option, Starbucks offers a “Puppuccino” drink which, in other words, is an espresso-sized cup of whipped cream. So, next time you are headed for a morning coffee, have your pup tag along!
